Our sins of commission can tend to dominate our focus. Those things that are obvious to us as well as to others. Our cursing or use of poorly chosen words that signify gossip or slander are clear examples. Likewise, our addiction to anything that holds mastery over us is also clear, e.g., laziness, gluttony, greed, etc.
Our sins of omission, however, tend to carry less focus. Those good things that we know we ought to do, but do not do. (James 4:17) So, what are those “good things?” Those things that are in keeping with following the Lord’s will, e.g., serving, teaching, loving, etc. These sins of omission are less obvious to others so they can end up being lower on our priority list. Others will not likely see what we see in terms of the opportunities that are before us. But the truth is, God sees. And He is the One we are called to obey.
Which brings us to the Great Omission.
During the days following His resurrection, Jesus met his disciples at a mountain in Galilee. He declared to them, that “All authority has been given to Me in heaven and on earth. Go therefore and make disciples of all the nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, teaching them to observe all things that I have commanded you; and lo, I am with you always, even to the end of the age.” (Matthew 28:18-20) This declaration by Jesus has been known as the “Great Commission.” The command Jesus gave to His disciples then is still true for us today. Every disciple of Jesus is commanded to “go and make disciples.” Yet, today, we seldom hear about the “Great Commission.” Hopefully, that is not true where you live. But it is true in much of the western world. It’s called the Great Omission. Our failure in the body of Christ to go and make disciples. Jesus placed this mission before us to follow Him and obey. Then to teach others also.
Jesus stated that we are to teach others to observe all things that He commanded us to do. To our children and to others too. Jesus chose twelve and invested about three years with them. How are you doing with your twelve? Are you ready for more?
Christ is King. His mission is our mission.
