The phrase, “well-driven nails” is a visual illustration with which most people can identify. As a child, I experimented with a hammer and nails in seeking to build a tree house. And I soon discovered that it not only takes a hammer and nails but strength, coordination and wisdom. It was an early beginning to discovering that navigating a particular task was not easy. It takes skill. A skill that requires repeated practice and time. But when the skill of using a hammer and nails is mastered, the foundation for a house is laid and built upon. A well-built house requires well-driven nails.
In raising our children, we sought to build foundations in the Word of God that would strengthen them in their life journey. Scripture memory was a part of that process. A process that would help build foundational truths that they would trust for faith and practice. Like well-driven nails in God’s Word, they would be laying a foundation built on Jesus Christ. (I Corinthians 3:10-11)
Following is a pop quiz you can use to assess how well someone can demonstrate their mastery of God’s truth. Eight topics are provided and you are asked to provide up to three Scripture verses on each topic. A person needs to quote both the Scripture reference as well as the verse, without any support material. It must be done by memory. You are more than welcome to use the quiz with your teenagers and others. Please feel free to add to the list. The quiz is designed to encourage children (adults too) that knowing and walking in God’s truth is part of our relationship with Him. You can find the quiz here:
Two resource suggestions you can find in the shop: 1) the Scripture Memory Coloring Cards; and 2) the Topical Memory System, published by NavPress. Both are excellent resources to help your children become masters of God’s truth.
P.S. The resources would also help with the pop quiz!

The Teaching Dad
The Scriptures provide clear direction for us Dads with regard to the teaching of our children. (Deuteronomy 6:7-9) It’s not optional, it’s a given. The reality of that command, however, can be daunting to the new Dad. The modern world around us…
Malachi Dads
The last book of the Old Testament contains the last words of the prophets as provided by God to the nation of Israel. A silence that would last for around four centuries. A friend of mine…
Dads and Donuts
There is an old saying that “The way to a man’s heart is through his stomach.” A rather crude way of saying that men are mainly driven by their appetite. There is some truth there. I found that to be so recently…
Discipline
This past year a friend of mine held a Zoom conference as a part of his work with business men. The title he selected for the subject of the call was “Distractions.” In the previous months…
